🫁Equine Asthma Environmental Recommendations 🫁
Equine Asthma (formerly known as Inflammatory airway disease) is defined as inflammation of the small airways of the respiratory tract. Horses with asthma may show signs of poor performance, exercise intolerance, coughing with or without mucus in the trachea with resulting nasal discharge. These signs are in the absence of signs of systemic infection (fever, high white blood cell count, etc.). Horses that display the above-mentioned signs and increased respiratory effort at rest may have "heaves" or recurrent airway obstruction (RAO).
Exposure of RAO and asthma affected horses to aerosolized particulate matter (dust from hay, bedding, arena footing, and pollen, etc.) and gases (ammonia, exhaust, etc.) contributes significantly to episodes of heavy breathing.
Ways to minimize and eliminate exposure to aerosolized particles include minimizing the generation of dust from bedding and hay and increasing ventilation of the barn to remove aerosolized particles quickly.
When environmental management is not enough to control coughing and breathing abnormalities, medical therapy is needed; however, the implementation of environmental management can dramatically reduce the need for that medicine.
The veterinarians at EquidDoc are here to help you create the best diagnostic and treatment plan for your horses if you suspect they may have asthma. Call EquidDoc at 508-885-4205 or email office@equiddocvet.com if you have any questions or concerns regarding Equine Asthma. … See MoreSee Less
