Pasture Management!
Your horse gazes longingly at the green blades calling from the other side of the fence as spring grass emerges in the pasture, but the transition from hay to grass has a huge impact for your horse!
Proper pasture management will prevent damage to your pasture, help prevent colic and laminitis in your horse.
Did you know?
Grass has far more sugar than hay. As a result, your horse must be gradually exposed to higher doses of sugar.
This allows your horse’s body to slowly adapt and maintain a healthy glucose and insulin balance. Elevated sugar levels will elevate insulin levels which can cause laminitis and change the gut microbes causing colic.
To safely transition your horse onto pasture, limit your horse’s turnout to only 10-15 minutes per day to begin and slowly increase turnout time over 4 weeks as shown in the chart below.

New Service Alert!
With so much nutritional information accessible and so many supplements on the market, it can be difficult to determine what a balanced diet is for your horse. EquidDoc Veterinary Services offers an on-farm equine nutrition evaluation to assist you in understanding your horse’s individual dietary needs. We can help create a personalized nutrition plan for your horse by examining the existing diet, any known health concerns, age, workload, and particular breed requirements. It is important to understand that a horse’s dietary requirements will alter over time, even seasonally.
