Shockwave Therapy
At EquidDoc Veterinary Services, we are committed to bringing advanced equine sports medicine directly to your farm. We offer PiezoWave® focused shockwave therapy, a non-invasive treatment option that can be incorporated into treatment and rehabilitation plans to support healing, reduce pain, and help horses return to work more comfortably. Whether your horse is a competitive athlete, a pleasure horse, or an aging companion, our veterinarians can help determine if focused shockwave therapy may be an appropriate addition to their care.
What Sets EquidDoc Apart
Our ability to combine advanced treatment options with comprehensive on-farm diagnostics, lameness evaluation, and sports medicine expertise. Rather than focusing on a single therapy, we work collaboratively with owners and trainers to develop individualized care plans tailored to each horse’s needs and goals. If you have questions about whether your horse may benefit from focused shockwave therapy, our team would be happy to discuss the available options during your next visit.
Does my horse need to be sedated?
No. With PiezoWave® focused shockwave technology, the acoustic energy is generated within the targeted tissues rather than creating a loud or sharp sensation at the skin surface.
Because of this, treatment is typically:
- Quieter than some traditional shockwave treatments
- Less uncomfortable at the level of the skin
- Well tolerated by many horses without sedation
Our veterinarians will assess each horse individually and discuss sedation if it is needed for safety, comfort, or handling.
How does shockwave work?
Focused shockwave therapy uses targeted acoustic energy—sound waves—directed to the specific depth and area of injury, soreness, or inflammation. This focused delivery allows the veterinarian to treat the affected tissue more precisely and thoroughly.
The acoustic pulses may help by:
- Increasing local blood flow to the treated area
- Reducing inflammation and discomfort
- Supporting the body’s natural tissue-healing process
Together, these effects can help reduce pain and improve comfort as part of a broader treatment or rehabilitation plan.
